Sourcing Teak Root Furniture for Kenya's Safari Lodges and Coastal Resorts

Teak Root Furniture for Kenya's Safari Lodges and Coastal Resorts

Kenya's furniture demand does not behave like a normal retail market. Much of it comes from a small number of very specific buyers: safari lodges, tented camps, coastal resorts and boutique hotels, many of which refurbish on a fixed cycle between high seasons. This guide is written for those buyers.

Why Lodges Specify Teak Root

A lodge is not a hotel with a lobby. Guests eat outdoors, sit on terraces, and expect the furniture to look as if it belongs to the landscape. Teak root works in that setting because the pieces are sculptural and irregular rather than uniform, and because dense teak handles heat, sun and humidity better than lighter timbers.

The pieces that appear most often in lodge specifications are dining tables, bar and bistro sets for outdoor decks, stools, benches, side tables and large planters or sculpture for entrances.

When Lodges Buy: The Refurbishment Window

Refurbishment usually happens in the low season, and the work must be finished before the next high season begins. That creates a hard deadline: the container has to arrive with enough time for installation before guests return.

Production takes around 12 weeks for a first order, and sea transit to Mombasa adds roughly four to five weeks. Working back from the season opening, the practical rule is to place the order four to five months before installation.

See the how to order steps and browse the teak root range for lodge specifications.

Coastal and Bush Conditions

Two different environments, two different considerations. On the coast, salt air and humidity reward a properly sealed finish and stainless or galvanised fittings. Inland, intense sun and dry air matter more, and a good quality exterior finish is what prevents checking and fading. We supply pieces finished for both, and we can advise on the right finish for your site.

  • Coastal resorts: sealed finish, marine-grade fittings, indoor-outdoor pieces
  • Inland lodges: UV-resistant finish, denser pieces, covers or shade for outdoor sets
  • Tented camps: lighter pieces that can be moved, plus sturdy dining and bar sets

Duty, Documents and Lead Time

Finished furniture entering Kenya attracts East African Community common external tariff duty, typically around 25 percent, plus VAT of 16 percent and small import levies. Kenya Bureau of Standards requirements may apply. We prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin, and can arrange fumigation and phytosanitary certificates.

Because African import duty is charged on value, project buyers often combine several lodges into one container to spread freight and clear once. Mixed loads are our normal way of working: a single 20-foot container can carry dining tables, bar sets, stools and planters together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What duty applies to furniture imported into Kenya?

Finished furniture attracts East African Community common external tariff duty of around 25 percent, plus VAT of 16 percent and small import levies. Kenya Bureau of Standards requirements may also apply, so confirm details with your broker.

How early should a lodge place its order?

Production takes about 12 weeks and sea transit to Mombasa roughly four to five weeks, so order four to five months before the season opening to leave time for installation.

Can you finish pieces for both coastal and bush conditions?

Yes. For the coast we recommend sealed finishes with stainless or galvanised fittings; for inland sun and dry air a quality exterior finish is what prevents checking and fading.

Can several lodges share one container?

Yes. Mixed loads are normal, and combining lodges into one 20-foot container spreads freight and lets you clear once.

Packing, loading and shipping

Every order is packed with protective wrapping, stacked to a load plan and staged before it leaves the factory. We list each piece so that what arrives matches what was ordered, and we can supply a container load plan for your customs broker.

Where does the container actually leave from? Everything is loaded in Jepara, on the north coast of Central Java, roughly two hours by road from the port of Semarang. Cartons are staged, checked against the packing list, then driven to the quay and lifted onto the vessel. Semarang is the port we quote from, which is why FOB Semarang is the term most buyers work on.
