Teak Root Furniture for Europe
Europe is the world's most exacting market for handcrafted natural-wood furniture, and it has become one of its fastest-growing importers. The EU's share of furniture, mattresses and similar furnishings coming from outside the bloc climbed from 15% to 21% between 2015 and 2024, turning a traditional manufacturing exporter into a net furniture importer (Eurostat, December 2025). Hospitality is feeding that shift: Europe's hotel construction pipeline stood at 1,736 projects and 255,976 rooms at the close of Q2 2026, up 3% year on year (Lodging Econometrics, August 2026), while hotel revenue per available room rose 4.5% in the first half of 2026 (CBRE midyear review, 2026). Specifiers fitting out that pipeline want organic shapes and single-piece tables.
The story for buyers planning 2026 shipments, though, is compliance. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) applies from 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators, and — unusually — wooden furniture keeps that date even for micro and small firms, which do not get the extra six months granted to non-timber goods (EUDR Navigator, 2026). Every teak root must be traceable to the plot it grew on, with evidence the land was not deforested after 31 December 2020.
Country by country: where European demand sits in 2026
Italy
Italy's hospitality and yacht fit-out market rewards sculptural, near-one-off pieces. Genoa, La Spezia, Livorno, Napoli and Venezia are the usual doors, and most specifiers buy through an importer holding stock for repeat projects.
Spain
Spain pairs a Mediterranean hotel-refurbishment cycle with a busy contract-retail channel. Valencia, Barcelona and Algeciras handle most containers, and Algeciras also feeds re-exports toward North Africa.
Belgium
Belgium is a compact, logistics-led market: Antwerp is one of Europe's largest ports and a consolidation point for Benelux and northern France. Importers are rigorous on documents and already ask for EUDR geolocation data.
France
French buyers lean toward organic, artisanal shapes with a story, and the contract market in Paris, Lyon and the Côte d'Azur is active through 2026. Le Havre and Marseille are the standard gateways. Root coffee tables with glass tops and sculptural stools sell strongly.
Germany
Germany is Europe's largest furniture importer and its most standards-driven. Hamburg and Bremerhaven are the main ports. Large buyers require full EUDR traceability, clean classification under HS 9403 60 and detailed load plans.
Portugal
Portugal has its own furniture industry, so imports must be differentiated, but its hotel and coastal-resort refurbishment cycle still pulls in distinctive accent pieces. Lisbon, Leixões and Sines are the entry points, and importers often prefer a smaller trial order first.
Malta
Malta is a small but dense hospitality market where five-star hotels and yacht marinas set the tone. The Malta Freeport is the nearest gateway, often supplied via transhipment from Genoa or Valencia.
Poland
Poland is one of Europe's fastest-growing furniture producers, which makes its importers selective. Gdańsk and Gdynia move containers efficiently. Handcrafted teak root works best there as a premium accent to mass-produced ranges rather than volume stock.
Netherlands
The Netherlands punches far above its size: Rotterdam is Europe's largest port and a continental distribution gateway. Dutch importers are among the most professional in Europe
United Kingdom
The UK runs its own customs and VAT regime post-Brexit, so a container bound for Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway needs a compliance file separate from EU stock.
Serbia
Serbia's Expo 2027 build-out in Belgrade is one of the region's largest upcoming hospitality pipelines, and early fit-out procurement is already moving. Containers usually arrive via Rijeka or Koper and cross overland.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does the EUDR actually apply to teak root furniture?
From 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators. Unusually, wooden furniture keeps that date even for micro and small firms, unlike most other goods, which receive until 30 June 2027 (EUDR Navigator, 2026). Prepare the geolocation and due-diligence file before you book the container.
Which European port should my shipment enter through?
It depends on your customer: Genoa or La Spezia for northern Italy, Rotterdam or Antwerp for Benelux, Hamburg or Bremerhaven for Germany, and Felixstowe or Southampton for the UK. We quote FOB Semarang, so you choose the port and forwarder.
What documents will a European importer need from us?
A commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, ISPM 15 marking on all wood packaging, and a deforestation due-diligence statement. Phytosanitary certificates are added where the importing country requires them.
