Teak Root and Branch Structures for Bespoke Projects: What Designers Ask Before Ordering

Written from what buyers actually ask us - including a furniture maker in Baku who needed root and branch structures, not finished tables.

Why a designer orders the root, not the table

Not every project wants a finished table. Sometimes the design calls for a single sculptural root holding a stone or timber top; sometimes a branch has to become a shelf support that a local joiner builds around. In those projects the buyer is not shopping for furniture at all - they are shopping for material that behaves: dried, cleaned, stable, and honest about what it is.

Bleached teak root piece - character and grain of real root material

Real wood, never resin - and why it matters

The first question we are asked is whether a piece is genuine solid wood or a cast imitation. It matters because a root has to carry real load, accept a screw or a dowel, and take a finish that ages. Resin copies look right in photographs and fail in a room. Every structure we ship is a real teak root or branch - never resin, never laminate.

The four things that decide whether a root piece survives

One: drying. Root material fails for one reason above all - water. We kiln-dry and heat-treat everything, and we report the moisture content with the photographs. Two: insect treatment. Heat treatment to ISPM 15 standard, so the piece can travel and clear customs. Three: bark and loose branches. Nothing ships with loose bark or unstable limbs - that is the first thing a joiner notices and the last thing you want to discover on site. Four: contact surfaces. We cut contact points flat and square so a console top sits properly and the piece stands without shims.

CBM versus weight: the maths nobody warns you about

Teak root is bulky and light relative to its price. A container is priced on volume, so two buyers can each fill a 20ft container and pay very different freight per piece. Before your first order, ask for the CBM and the packed weight of the pieces you are considering - not only the unit price. It is the single number that tells you what the material will actually cost you landed.

Unfinished or lightly sanded - so you can match your own finish

Many of our trade buyers finish in their own workshop, matching a veneer, an oil or a lacquer already used elsewhere in the scheme. We can supply structures unfinished or lightly sanded for exactly that reason, or finish them here if you prefer - natural, bleached or smooth sanded.

One project, one container: how mixed loads work

Our minimum order is one 20ft container, FOB Semarang, because that is how teak root leaves Jepara economically. But a single project almost never needs a whole container, so we consolidate pieces with other orders in one mixed load. That is how a villa, a restaurant fit-out or one bespoke commission can still ship on its own schedule. Production is normally 12 weeks from deposit, and every piece is photographed, measured and priced for your approval before loading.
