Teak Roots for Florida's Hotels and Villas

See our catalogue and wholesale terms before you plan a Florida load.

Florida is building hotels faster than almost anywhere in the United States. Miami-Dade alone has 98 hotels in its development pipeline that would add 20,172 rooms to a current supply of about 66,000 — with 20 of those projects already under construction (CoStar figures reported by Miami Today, January 2026). A separate mid-2026 count put 93 Miami-Dade hotels and 19,306 rooms in the pipeline, still close to a 30 percent increase in county room supply. Add a 2026 refurbishment wave of $100-million-plus upgrades in Miami and Orlando, and the practical question for an importer is not whether Florida is buying furniture, but where the specifiers are buying it and how they clear it.

This article is written for the people who actually place those orders: hospitality FF&E contractors, interior designers, villa and beach-club operators, and furniture importers stocking South Florida showrooms. It sets out what is being specified this season, what a container of teak root furniture really costs to land in Miami, which port to clear through, and how to build a first order that does not strand a project.

What Florida is specifying right now

The design language running through Florida's 2026 interiors is organic, warm and material-led. Trade coverage of the season describes a shift to natural woods, visible grain and sculptural, hand-made forms over high-gloss finishes — the same "organic modern" direction that moved through European hospitality a year or two earlier. That is precisely the register teak root sits in: pieces are built from the root mass rather than a straight board, so no two bases are identical and every surface shows the movement of the grain.

In practice we see three Florida patterns. First, boutique hotels and beach clubs specifying a sculpted root base under a glass or stone top for dining rooms, because the base reads as a piece of art while the top stays practical for service. Second, villa and short-let operators ordering root consoles, root coffee tables and clustered root stools for the visible areas — lobbies, terraces and pool bars — where a unique silhouette is worth more than a repeatable one. Third, restaurants and cafés mixing root stools and benches with standard-height tables to break the uniformity of a hospitality fit-out.

The material reasoning matters as much as the look. Teak is naturally high in oil and resistant to moisture, which is why it has been a boat-deck timber for generations and why it holds up on a Florida terrace where resin-heavy alternatives fade or crack. Root pieces are dense and heavy, so they stay put in wind and handle the salt air of a coastal property without the constant refinishing that lighter woods need.

The landed-cost maths worth running before you negotiate

Most importers negotiate on FOB price and only discover their real cost after the container has cleared. Florida is a good market to run the full calculation on, because the surprises are rarely in the tariff itself — they sit in freight, port fees and inland handling. The table below is the sheet worth building before you compare two suppliers.

Cost lineHow it is setPractical note for Florida
FOB SemarangQuoted per containerThe only figure you can compare factory-to-factory on equal terms.
Ocean freightRate per 20′FCLVaries with season and carrier; confirm live with your forwarder rather than trusting a fixed number.
Marine insuranceA small percentage of CIF valueWorth carrying: solid wood pieces are heavy and awkward to handle.
US import dutyHTS 9403, by product lineFor Indonesian-origin goods there is no Section 301 China tariff. Several finished wooden-furniture lines under 9403 sit at low or free MFN rates — confirm the exact code and rate with your customs broker.
Customs fees (MPF / HMF)Calculated on entered value and modeMerchandise Processing Fee and, for ocean freight, the Harbor Maintenance Fee both apply; your broker applies the current figure.
Drayage & inland deliveryQuoted by the local forwarderPort Miami and Port Everglades each have a warehouse corridor close to the berth; distance drives the last part of your cost.

Two features of the Florida market change this maths. First, South Florida is a distribution hub as much as a destination: a container can be transloaded into a 53-foot trailer and moved into the national network, so where it lands decides your cost per pallet, not just your local delivery. Second, the 2026 tariff environment is more fluid than a few years ago, which is exactly why the HTS code and current rate should be confirmed with a broker before you commit to a margin.

Which Florida port should your container clear through

FOB Semarang leaves the choice of port to you, and in Florida it is a real decision. The state has several container gateways, and where the goods land changes inland cost, transit time and which forwarder can handle the job cleanly.

PortBest suited toWhat to know in 2026
Port MiamiMiami-Dade, and cargo being transloaded for the national networkFurniture is one of the highest-volume import categories through the port. Miami-Dade's industrial stock clusters in Medley, Doral and Hialeah, all inside a short dray of the berth.
Port EvergladesBroward, Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beach corridorBroward's warehouse corridor along I-595 is the mirror image of Miami's, which is why Broward-bound projects often clear here instead.
Port Tampa BayGulf-coast projects and central Florida resortsA practical alternative when the delivery address is Tampa, Sarasota or the Gulf coast and a Miami dray would add needless road time.
JAXPORT (Jacksonville)North Florida and onward Southeast distributionWorth pricing when the container will be broken down and re-shipped rather than delivered whole.

In practice an Orlando or Tampa project is usually cheaper to clear on the Gulf side, while a Miami Beach or Fort Lauderdale hotel points to Port Miami or Port Everglades. Ask your forwarder for an all-in landed quote per port before you fix the routing — the FOB price is identical either way, so the port is where the last percentage points of cost live.

Making the first order safe

Florida buyers tend to arrive with a catalogue and a deadline. The orders that go smoothly share a few habits.

  • Start with a mixed container. A single 20-foot container can carry a teak root dining table, a root coffee table with a glass top, several root stools or benches, a root console and a few root planters or bowls. That lets a buyer judge finish and packing quality before committing to the volume a full renovation needs.
  • Send a comparable RFQ. Give the same specification, finish and packing requirements to every supplier, so the quotes you compare are genuinely like for like. A short SKU list with quantities beats a long email of inspiration images.
  • Build the timeline backwards from the opening. Production on a first order runs about 12 weeks from confirmed deposit, and sea freight from Semarang adds several weeks more. A refit that must finish for a winter season is ordered months earlier than most first-time buyers expect.
  • Fix the finish in writing. Colour, sheen and top material (glass, stone or solid) are the details that cause disputes, so agree them before production rather than at delivery.

Send your item list and quantities, and we will confirm the finish, the packing and a realistic timeline — so the container lands in time for your opening.

Where these pieces come from

Every piece in a Florida load is made in Jepara, on the north coast of Central Java, a town that has carved teak for generations. A root piece does not begin as a plank; it begins as the root mass itself, cleaned, dried and then shaped so the natural movement of the wood becomes the design. Drying is the slow part and the part most affected by the weather, because a root holds more moisture than a straight board and will move if it is rushed. That is why a first order runs weeks rather than days, and why the workshops here optimise for stability rather than speed.

We are CV. Nusantara Sourcing Agent, producing in Jepara since 2016 and loading four 40-foot containers a month for importers, hotel groups and interior contractors in Europe and North America. Over 300 containers have left since we started. A buyer is welcome to visit the factory and inspect a load before it ships — that inspection is part of how we work, not an exception.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay duty on teak root furniture imported into the United States?

Wooden furniture enters under HTS heading 9403, and the rate depends on the exact product line. For goods of Indonesian origin there is no Section 301 China tariff. Several finished wooden-furniture lines sit at low or free MFN rates, but you should confirm the exact code and current rate with your customs broker, who will also apply the Merchandise Processing Fee and, on ocean freight, the Harbor Maintenance Fee.

Which port should a Miami or Fort Lauderdale project use?

Miami-Dade and Broward projects usually clear through Port Miami or Port Everglades, because the warehouse corridors around each port keep drayage short. Gulf-coast and central Florida projects are often cheaper through Port Tampa Bay, and North Florida distribution can go through JAXPORT. Ask your forwarder for an all-in landed quote per port before fixing the routing.

Can a single villa or a small studio order just one container?

Yes. The minimum is one 20-foot container with mixed items, so a studio, a single villa refurbishment or a boutique hotel can combine a teak root dining table, a root coffee table with a glass top and a few root stools in one load. A first order runs about 12 weeks in production, with a 50 percent deposit and the balance before shipment.

How does a teak root piece hold up in Florida's humidity and salt air?

Teak is naturally oily and moisture-resistant, which is why it has long been used for boat decks, and a root piece is dense and heavy enough to stay put on an exposed terrace. The material suits coastal Florida better than most alternatives, though any solid-wood piece benefits from being kept out of standing water and from periodic oiling if it lives fully outdoors.

Packing, loading and shipping

Teak root furniture cartons being loaded for container export in Jepara

Every order is packed with protective wrapping, stacked to a load plan and staged before it leaves the factory. We list each piece so that what arrives matches what was ordered, and we can supply a container load plan for your customs broker.

Where does the container actually leave from? Everything is loaded in Jepara, on the north coast of Central Java, roughly two hours by road from the port of Semarang. Cartons are staged, checked against the packing list, then driven down to the quay and lifted onto the vessel. Semarang is the port we quote from, which is why FOB Semarang is the term most buyers work on.
