Uruguay has a particular way of living outdoors. A house in Punta del Este is judged by its terrace as much as its living room: long lunches under a pergola, shade that moves during the day, furniture that looks better after a season of salt air rather than worse. That is the conversation we understand, because the material we work with was shaped by weather long before it reached a showroom.
Mediterranean warmth, tropical origin
The look our Uruguayan buyers describe most often is warmth without polish: light and honey tones, organic and irregular silhouettes, handcrafted detail that shows the hand that made it, and a relaxed elegance that does not ask to be protected from real life. Teak root gives exactly that. Every piece is cut from the root system of the teak tree, so no two are identical, and the surface carries the grain, hollows and fissures of the material rather than a veneer printed to imitate it.
Suar wood — also sold as trembesi — answers the other half of that brief. Where a project needs repeatable dimensions (a matched pair of side tables, a run of stools for a beach club), suar can be cut to a fixed size and reordered, while keeping the warm, natural finish. The two materials sit in the same room without competing.
What a Punta del Este house usually asks for
In practice the list repeats: a large dining table for ten to twelve people, a low coffee table for a covered terrace, two or three side tables that can be moved between rooms, a console at the entrance, stools that double as extra seating, and a mirror or bowl that carries the same material into a hallway. That is a natural first container, and it can be mixed — you do not have to commit to a single model to fill it.
For coastal use we normally recommend a glass or stone top on any surface that will serve food and drink, and we will tell you plainly when a piece belongs indoors. Salt air is not the enemy of this furniture; standing water and dry heat are.
Where the furniture lands, and who handles what
We quote FOB Semarang on the north coast of Java. Your forwarder handles the sailing to Montevideo and the customs entry in Uruguay; our documents are prepared for that handover — commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and the packing declaration your broker will ask for. We do not quote landed prices, because freight and duty are local matters you are better placed to negotiate than we are.
Packing is built for a long sea voyage and for a receiving team that has to open a container without damaging what is inside: each piece wrapped, labelled by item code, and loaded against a CBM plan you receive before booking. The packing and shipping process is documented step by step if you need it for an internal approval.
Beyond teak root: rattan and cane
Some parts of a tropical and Mediterranean brief are not teak root at all — a hanging chair, a round rattan chair, a deep sofa with cushions. We do not make those in our own workshop, and we would rather say so than send a photograph of something we cannot repeat. What we can do is source them through workshops we work with in Jepara, sample first, and ship them in the same container as the teak root pieces so that the collection arrives coherent rather than in fragments.
Order sizes and how a first order works
The minimum is one 20ft container, and it can be mixed. A first order typically starts with samples of two or three models, then a mixed container while the collection settles; the second order is usually where a buyer becomes specific about repeat models and finishes. Lead time is about 12 weeks for a first order, 50% deposit and the balance before shipment.
Frequently asked questions
Do you ship to Montevideo?
We ship FOB Semarang. Your forwarder books the sailing and clears the goods in Uruguay; we prepare the export documents and the loading plan, and we coordinate with your forwarder on the booking window.
Can we mix teak root and suar wood in one container?
Yes, and most first orders do. Suar allows repeatable dimensions, teak root supplies the one-off pieces, and both are packed and labelled the same way.
What is the minimum order?
One 20ft container, mixed items. There is no minimum per model.
Do you work with designers and small retailers?
Yes. A container can be built around a single project or split between a shop floor and a client's house; the loading plan simply reflects that mix.
If you are furnishing a house or opening a small import business in Uruguay, send us the room list or a photograph of the style you have in mind. We will reply with the closest models we already make, their dimensions and CBM, and an honest note on anything that would have to come from a partner workshop.
